Emerson's Zanzibar Foundation Art Award 2021

The Emerson’s Zanzibar Foundation has created a new award to support artists to exhibit and improve their skills.

The art award was open to all Zanzibari artists who were selected after following a process, created by the curator Luba L Roshchyna.

The finalists art exhibition exhibited 100 artworks by 36 artists and has been visited over the last month by a large number of guests and locals.  Several of the pieces of art have been sold.

The winner of the award, Hamza Ausiy, was presented with a beautiful glass trophy and received a cheque for 2,000,000 tsh.

His painting ‘Sokoni’ (Market) was an evocative and thoughtful painting combining images representing the cultural past and the future of Stonetown.

Abdu Haji Ussi’s painting of environmental challenges, “Dustbin Droppers”, received a certificate and the opportunity to exhibit his work in the Emerson on Hurumzi Hotel.

Jamal, received a certificate and special mention with his painting entitled ‘Protect your Tomorrow’ and Abdalla also received a special mention with his painting of ‘Madafu’ (coconuts).

The ceremony was graced by the Deputy PS of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr Khamis Said, as the guest of honour and Ms Mariam Hamdani as cultural specialist and ambassador in Zanzibar.

Congratulations go not only to the winner, but to all those who participated, helped or supported this historic endeavour, exhibition and event. Ultimately the winner will be Zanzibar art and culture!
